Splashing paint for fun

warp
I haven’t painted for the sheer pleasure of it for a couple of months now, so today I thought I’d change that. I haven’t set myself any targets or goals this month. It’s all about relaxing. I have been putting in a fair few late nights making artwork for my laser cutting and have been putting painting anything far away.
This is one figure from the Arcworlde Kickstarter I received a few months ago but didn’t start, well apart from prepping and priming.

Oooh shiny! So much for discipline!

There I was, being disciplined in my painting, and along come the Orcs from the Lancer Miniatures Kickstarter.

Shiny!

So what happens? I stop painting what I was doing and start these.

Here is a view of my production line. This is pretty much what I do when I have a unit to paint.

Magnetising the bases with neodymium magnets

Cleaning the mold lines with my new Dremmel attachment
orcy4
Basing with sand and PVA
orcy1
Undercoating the shields. I’ve been a bit lazy and used an old can of yellow primer that I had lying around rather than using my airbrush.

Wood basecoat.

Metal painted. A test shield with wash and in the background you can see the beginnings of a movement tray.

Lancer Miniatures Orc Kickstarter

Just got these in the post this morning.

Thirty “Old Skool” figures that would fit in very well with my old Warhammer Regiments plastic Orcs. There are twenty different poses including command. Ten of these are doubled up to make the thirty.

The molding isn’t as sharp as I would like, but as this is a new venture I’m willing to give Lancer a chance. Mold lines are there but not as bad as some GW figures from the 80’s. I may have to do some filing on the hands to make the shields fit, but nothing major.

I will be dropping next month’s figures to make a start on these. There is an ulterior motive, Lancer Miniatures are running a painting competition to win the next set of Kickstarter minis.orcs.

September

Well I managed to finish painting the thirty strong unit of Celts from Warlord Games. All that remains is to finish the movement tray and the shields. The shields can wait because the transfers provided by Warlord were frankly very disappointing. They looked as if they had been printed on a cheap laser printer that was running low on toner. I’ll wait until I get to Salute and get some shield transfers from Little Big Man Studios.

August progress

Here are some work in progress shots of my command vehicle used in my Not DKK Army. Vehicle by Ramshackle Games from the recent Kickstarter.

Undercoat and the start of weathering

Rubbing away the white paint. I used the Hairspray Technique for this. It is a bit disheartening to spend hours painting on weathering for it all to be painted over.

Black stripes. I wasn't as successful as I had hoped with the masking and had to do a fair amount of retouching.

A new Kickstarter project I’m backing

This is a project I’m backing. They look like old skool GW Orcs.

They have a little bit of this vibe going on

Thirty figures, twenty of them being different poses with full command for thirty eight quid! That’s including international postage. Sounds like a bargain to me.

Am I the last person to the party with this resource?

I just spent an afternoon reading and adding to my “Library” all the books that I had thought of tracking down on eBay.
Warhammer Ancient Battles for forty quid? I don’t think so. Most of these titles I’d only look at once or twice a year so money (I don’t have anyway) saved.

Can you tell what it is yet? Part 2

Can you tell what it is yet? Part 2

This is my current painting set up while I am between houses and I just fancied having something a bit more tailored for my needs, rather than an old tray.

Stealing toys from my Boys

Stealing toys from my Boys

I’m guilty as charged m’lud. Recently I’ve started using a little bit of black-lining on my models. It’s made up of Vallejo Black, Johnson’s Klear and a touch of water. I store it in an old Vallejo bottle and use the lid to dip my brush in. Problem is the bottle top is not the most stable and I’ve been propping it up in the corner of my tray. I had thought of getting some wood from my Father in Laws and drilling a hole in it. Tidying up my Boy’s room this afternoon, “Lightbulb!” There were some wooden blocks that I had to put away and in amongst them was a little red cube. It was a matter of moments to get the drill and make a small hole with a slightly chamfered edge. Just the right size and not too space consuming on the tray.

My penny’s worth on the new White Dwarf editions

I  did write three pages worth of notes looking at the first two issues of Warhammer Visions and an issue of White Dwarf Weekly. Then I just thought, why bother, you’ve already seen it and made up your own minds about it. Plus there is so much on the interweb already which you’ve probably read.

My penny’s worth is, don’t bother unless it is an army you like or collect, otherwise you are just wasting your money. Really really pointless money making exercise by Games Workshop. Go and buy Wargames Illustrated, chase down back issues of the Weathering Magazine, or buy beer and pizza.
